A Weave of Lies

“Only a madman, or a desperate fool, would walk uninvited into a witch’s lair.”
“Tell me, which one do you think I am, witch?”

The witch Semras sees her quiet life in the woods upended the day Inquisitor Estevan Velten walks into her home. He’s not here to burn her at the stake, like he did to many witches before her, but to consult her on a murder.
A member of her coven is the only suspect, yet he harbors doubts about their guilt. Semras’ expertise with poisons is requisitioned to acquit them … or so he claims.
She’d do anything to save a coven sister, even if it means allying with an enemy. But the mercurial inquisitor confounds her at every turn. He threatens yet defends her; he mocks yet praises her. His every word contradicts his actions, his every touch confuses her, and she craves to know who he truly is beneath his title.    But Estevan is as damnably seductive as he is dangerous. When she discovers he knows more than he lets on about the murder, the lies he weaves to protect his secrets may yet lead her to the pyre. Because someone killed a man, and someone needs to pay for it.What’s the difference between one witch or another in the eyes of the Inquisition?

The Woven Worlds series brings readers to the Vandalesia Peninsula, a fantasy realm inspired by 18th-century Spain and Renaissance Italy, where old magic and those believing in it struggle to find their place into the coming early modern era.

About the author

E. M. Riedl—or "Emri" for short—is a Canadian geek who always wondered why authors needed biographies. When not plagued by the existential crisis of having to write about herself in the third person, she spends her leisure time playing role-playing games (of the video and tabletop variety) and reading about obscure history facts far too late into the night.    Ever since she started writing fantasy books at the inadvisable age of ten, Emri has been pursued by plot bunnies and had, until now, successfully ran away from them before completing anything.    Her time of blissful, daydreaming procrastination ended with A Weave of Lies, her debut standalone novel. Emri is now planning many more fantasy romance books set in the Woven Worlds universe.
